Symbolic Monarchs in Mexico

Vicente Guerrero Elementary, Grades 4, 5, and 6
This school is part of the Ejido El Rosario, and among the three closest schools within the first belt surrounding area to Sanctuary “El Rosario.”

Children arrive to school at 9 am. The mayority of them walk only some hundreds meters to 1-2 kilometers at the most.  Many of them are dropped and picked up later by their mothers. Once at the school many students recognize Rocinante and come to greet us immeditely with great excitement.

In the classroom the monarch migration and life-cycle lesson is always interesting, refreshing and arises questions while going along the map speaking to themselves as in half a voice tone, “I wonder where my Monarch and my letter is coming from now, woooww!” Then when we talk about the forest trees,

Oh, I had not realized the many names we have for our trees. Our grandparents used to cut trees for many purposes: for making the roofs of our houses, for fencing our home surroundings, for housing our rabbits and turkeys and hens and roots; for burning for cooking at home.”—many state as they say which tree’s wood were used for what—
Things have changed; now our homes are built from cement; our moms cook in gas stoves”, --many stated--.
“That is contributing to preserve our forests for Monarchs and for ourselves in the future."

A few children at 5th, 6th, grades are already able to realice how little by little our society is going for a change in terms of sensibility about nature’s care--.

Opening their gifts is indeed one of the best moments of the visit!

During break time, the boys mostly play foot-ball while the girls stay around talking and perhaps doing a small game as part of the converstion. All love to buy the delicious ice-cream.
