Symbolic Monarchs in Mexico

Jaime Torres Bodet Telescondia, Level 3 (Third year)
This school is located in “San Luis Community”, Ejido El Rosario. It is one of the two middle schools located at the closest surrounding to “El Rosario Sanctuary.”

At Middle schools (Telescondia) in our Education system, students stay for 3 years, (after their 6 years of Elementary education).  Every teacher teaches his group the 6-8 subjects they attend, including English. Teachers should have Elementary knowledge in English in order to attend this requirement as professionals. The subjects they attend are Spanish, Maths, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, English, Ethics and Sports. This school and their teachers have one more time welcomed Journey North in the most enthusiastic way I can experience among many other schools which do similar!

A child of the community recognizing Rocinante - VW bug, came up to me asking, “you are coming to bring our letters from the children in the North, right?. I am a little late, but I am coming!”
This only very first moment in the morning running into this child and seeing his joy at recognizing and peeping with his eyes into “Rocinante” carrying the box with their letters,  changes the beginning of my day to be a magical day!!!.

The school is located at the bottom of the valley of the small village surrounded by a rather high fence.  Many schools decide sooner or later to fence the facilities all around; a way to limit the school’s property.

As soon as I am allowed into the classroom we begin the presentation. These teenagers get all rapt attention at the comments of the way Monarchs and all plant and animal species, --of course Monarchs as main topic--,  are dependant on the habitat’s preservation.  Students comment about the way Monarchs have made a big change in their families’ lives and their sense of conservation of the Oyamel forests nowadays.

Having received Journey North since they were attending Elementary, these students are perfectly clear on the migration facts and study the map remembering how Monarchs come to overwinter in our Oyamel forests.
Once they focus in the photos, they are astonished that, for example, our local ecosystem should have taken hundreds of thousands of years to get formed, having a deep background reference on its geological history behind…

Students, teachers and Estela go out their classroom to explore for some minutes the surrounding of the school yard to observe wild plants, little animals, the forest at the distance where Monarchs have just arrived to overwinter, and inspire themselves to write the letters they will send to their Friends to US and Canada, where they tell a little bit about the local forest and fauna.

Teachers of the school delighted to receive a special butterfly from a teacher from Normandy school in Cleveland who, a few years ago sent her students’ symbolic Monarch to this School in San Luis. A special symbolic Monarch was brought by a colleage of hers coming to visit the Sanctuary El Rosario and Estela remembered to bring it to the school as an appreciation and special link to this school!  Teachers received book donation, Abremente and Verbs in English. They are delighted to receive this material so their students can be learning though games!
