Symbolic Monarchs in Mexico

La Salud Telesecundaria, Level 1
La Salud Telesecundaria is located in the “La Salud” community, Ejido Angangueo.

From all programs and benefits and teaching about Monarchs’ preservation, “Journey North” seems to be the only program arriving to the schools in this community, considering it necessary to include them in the determining role of their forest and rivers and meadows surrounding Monarchs’ overwintering sites, due to their close proximity to “El Rosario” sanctuary.

Driving towards the school you can see how the roads are rough. Once we're at the school students are excited to share the protection for the monarch and spent time writing their letters to their counterparts in the north.

Students take some time reflecting and exchanging on the richness of our local hábitat and its importance to Monarchs, being meadow and canopy flowers a very important source for nectaring and water sources indispensable for them to during their overwintering time.
We discuss the Monarchs’ life-cycle time in United States and South-Eastern Canada; their challenges for survival there too.

These students received the Journey North program when they were in elementary school, they show themselves knowledgeable on Monarchs life and migration!

Students could not help getting delighted and surprised at the same time at opening their symbolic monarchs. Thet were fascinated to see the maps to show them where exactly in the north their correspondent-friends are living. It was fascinating for them to again see the northern latitudes where the monarchs have flown from to get to their mountains in Mexico.

Book Donation was “Chicas a la Moda,” and a fun English Verbs game, “Constitución para Niños.”

Some students along the way, show Estela some of the favorite wild flowers for polinators, includin, Monarchs. (They excused themselves for feeling shy at the camera trying to shoot them!) A boy was reparing the broken hose that provides mountain, pure water for his family.

Farewell, wishing to see again next year!
