The monarchs arrive each year around the first of November during the celebration of the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Since pre-Hispanic times people here see the arrival of the Monarch as a symbol of their ancestors' souls returning for an annual visit. At the cemetery ancestors are honored in a very special way.
