1998 The Year of the Ocean Did you know that this year has been designated by the United Nations as International Year of the Ocean? In recognition of the many challenges and opportunities offered by the ocean as we enter the 21st century. The ocean affects our weather and climate, provides a home to fisheries, which are a major food source for the world, and is largely unexplored in its depths. The goal of Year of the Ocean is to raise public awareness about the importance and relevance of the ocean in our lives.
