Reminder: Special Instructions for Warmer Regions

Don't Forget
If you live in California and the Gulf States (Plant Hardiness Zones 8, 9, 10 or 11) you must follow special instructions due to the warm temperatures in your region.

Note These 3 Important Dates

  • December 1, 1997
  • December 8, 1997
  • January 5, 1998

There are 3 critical dates for you to keep in mind. These dates are all provided the instructions, but we want to highlight them here:

December 1, 1997
Before this date you must REPORT back to Journey North and confirm that you PLAN to plant an official garden. Here's why: On December 12, we will post a list of all official Journey North gardens, so schools will be able to contact partners to exchange predictions and data. In cold regions, people will have already planted their gardens by early December. However, because you won't plant your garden until January, and because we want to include your school on the list, you must report back BEFORE your garden is planted. The REPORT form will ask the date your tulips were planted. USE JANUARY 5, 1997 as your planting date.

December 8, 1997
This is the latest date you can begin to force dormancy. As explained in the special planting instructions, your bulbs must be refrigerated for at least 4 weeks. In order to plant on January 5th, December 8, 1997 is the latest date you can start this process.

January 5, 1998
Plant your tulips any time during the week of January 5, 1998.
