Our School

Greetings from Erla Baldvinsdottir's 8th Grade Biology class at Barnaskoli Vestmannaeyja school, in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland.

Our Island

Map of Iceland

In our class we have 24 students. All the kids are 13 years old. The students in our school are diffrent ages, the youngest are six years old but the oldest are fifteen years old. Most of our classrooms are fine. But the classroom we study biology in is not so big, but with good will we all fit in there.

Our home town is on a small island just out of the south coast of Iceland. Everyone knows everyone here and that's very nice. In Westman island (that's the name of out town) lives about 4700-4900 people. And most of the people work in fish factorys or on boats at the sea, fishing.

Eruption of 1973

Twenty six years ago an erruption started on out island. All the people had to leave their homes as soon as possible and were taken to the main island (Iceland). Many houses burned down and others were destroyed by ash. The eruptions stopped six months later and then most of the people turned back to their homes and started all over again.

Last year a new "boy" came to town he is very big and lives in the sea. This boys name is "Keiko" and he is a whale. He is very happy here and soon he will be on his own swimming with other whales in the sea.

Keiko's new home

Here in Westman islands the winters are rather cold (-9C) and very windy. During the summer the heat is about 20 degrees when it is hottest. But most of the time we get a lot of rain and fog. But this is our home so we must like it a lot otherwise we wouldn't be here.
