Introducing Mystery Class # 4
Istanbul, Turkey 41.00 N, 29.00 E

After a lot of hard work and a fun contest we have chosen our winning introduction for the Mystery Class.

USKUDAR AMERICAN ACADEMY

Our country , Turkey has been a republic since 1923. Turkey is located in the northern hemisphere and it is surrounded by three seas: Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea and the Agean Sea. We also have a small sea called the Marmara Sea that is contained by the northern west part of the country. We have seven regions in our country: Black Sea, Mediterranean, Marmara, Agean, Middle Anatolia, East Anatolia and South East Anatolia regions.

Therefore, we have different climates in different regions. Usually it is warm near the sea coasts, and when you go away from the sea you'll see that it is very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter. This affects agriculture in a bad way. Greece, Bulgaria, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Armenia and Georgia are the countries which are neighbours to us.

Our formal language is Turkish but because there are some Kurdish, Georgian, Armenian etc. people in our country there are also some ethnic languages in our country. Anatolia, the place where most of our country is located, has been a dwelling for many people in the prehistorical and historical times. As a result, we have many historical buildings in our country. You can see many different cultures in our country because we have different ethnic groups. Each ethnic group has its own dance, own legends and stories, own kind of music and own language.

As you probably know, our people are mostly Moslems and their religion is Islam. However, there are some Christians, Jewish people and other people who believe other kinds of religions too.

As Uskudar American Academy students, we live in Istanbul. Istanbul is famous for its large population. It has 12 million people. (that's about one quarter of Turkey's population!) Also it is the city which connects Europe and Asia by the Bosphorus Bridge so the city is divided into two parts as the Europe side and the Anatolia side. Many people in Istanbul live on the Anatolia side and work on the Europe side. So most people in Istanbul complain about the famous traffic jams. Also pollution is another problem as it is in other big cities too. Istanbul is also very famous for its historic sights and because of this, many tourists come here for sightseeing.

Our school, Uskudar American Academy is in Uskudar which is an important district of Istanbul. You can see many old and beautiful houses in Uskudar. Our school is very old too, but only since 1989 have boys been admitted to this school. Before this date there were only girls being educated. We can see that it is very old from the buildings, the garden with a lot of old and big trees in it and the old gate which is the symbol of UAA.

We have five buildings: Barton Hall, Martin Hall, Morgan Hall, Huntington Hall and the Gym. As Orta 1 D students, our class is in Barton Hall which is the oldest building in our school. Last summer this building and the other old buildings in the campus were restored so despite its historical sight , our building is very modern. Some other Orta 1 classes have a view of the Marmara Sea but as Orta 1D class we can only see the gate where we enter the school. Most teachers believe that we're the most successful class but they all are concerned about our behavior . We're a little playful! (but just a little )

It was our Science teacher, Mr. Slodki who asked us to be a part of this internet project. He wanted us to write information about our country and we all did. He also told us that ten other schools were parts of this project too, so we would know ten different parts of the world and most importantly we would introduce our country, our people, our city and our very dear school, class and friends. It was this that made us believe that this project would be important.
