He is the now-weaned calf of Dmitra, a manatee from Florida's west
coast that also was followed by Journey North last year. Both Ivan and Dmitra were
tagged in the Homosassa River on 26 Jan 1999. Scientists first met them in Feb 1998,
wintering in the warm spring waters of Crystal River. Ivan was probably born in the
summer of 1997.
When we last left off, Ivan's tag had stopped transmitting on 13 Feb 1999, which
Susan and Jim determined to be due to a boat strike to the transmitter housing. Dmitra
and Ivan were seen together through the winter of 1999. The last visual sighting
of them together was on 4/12/99. Dmitra was seen on 5/10, without Ivan, so he was
weaned sometime between 4/12 and 5/10! Ivan returned to the Homosassa River in Dec
1999 as a "first year independent", dragging his second boat-struck transmitter.
Jim was able to remove the damaged transmitter and replace it with a new one on 6
Jan 2000. He is fine! |
