Greetings from Mr. Kent Peterson's 5th grade class at Mont'Kiara International
School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia!

There are 23 students in our class and we come from many different places. We have
students from Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Japan, United States, Singapore,
Holland, Switzerland, Germany, Argentina, France, Cote D'Ivoire and England.
We attend school Monday through Friday from 8:30-3:30 each day. At recess, classmates
play football(soccer), ultimate frisbee, four square and tag games. Our school just
built a rock climbing wall as well. We presented the play "The Tempest"
by Shakespeare.
|
|
Here we are hard at work. Each child has a water
bottle to keep from getting dehydrated in the Malaysian heat.

Sometimes when we are playing on the playground, monkeys will climb across the
fences that surround our field. Occasionally cobras have been found on the school
grounds as well.
Our People
|
Celebrating the Indian holiday of Thai Pusan.
|
Our school, city and country have a mix of different peoples:
- Population of Kuala Lumpur: 1.8 million
- People: 59% Malays and various indigenous groups, 32% Chinese, 9% Indian
- Main language: Bahasa Malay, Chinese, English, Tamil
Time Zone: Greenwich Mean Time/UTC+8
Because of the mix of people in our country, we celebrate the main holidays of
each of the 3 main peoples of Malaysia. For example, the photo to the right shows
a man and his son on the Indian holiday of Thai Pusan.
OurGeography
We are located near the equator in Southeast Asia. Thailand is to our
north, Singapore is on our southern tip and Indonesia to our south across the Straits
of Melakka. East Malaysia is across the South China Sea and includes the Malaysian
states of Sarawak and Sabah. It is part of the Indonesian island of Borneo.
- In Sarawak you can visit an orangutan preserve that reintroduces these primates
to the wild.
- In Sabah you can visit the largest known caverns in the world, the Mulu
Caves.
|
Map of our Country
|
Since we are so close to the equator, our climate is tropical. We have frequent
rain, high temperatures and often high humidity. There are monsoons on the East coast
at the end of the year. Much of the country is covered with rain forest.
Kuala Lumpur has two of the top 6 tallest structures in the world. The Petronas Twin
Towers is the tallest building in the world if you count its mast. Soon other buildings
being built will be taller. The KL Tower is a telecommunications tower, not actually
a building for people.
