Introducing Mystery Class #4 Bienvenidos a Angangueo!
Just think, while you carefully noted the change in day length at this site, millions of monarch butterflies did too! Lengthening photoperiod is the butterflies' cue that spring is approaching and it's time to begin their migration. While there are no Internet connections in this remote region of Mexico, students here are actively involved in Journey North. When the monarchs arrived in the sanctuaries last fall, the students in the region announced the news:
This spring, your migration observations are being sent back to them! As the butterflies
fly over your homes, schools and cities, Journey North sends a FAX to the town of
Angangueo. Our coordinator there, German Medina, distributes the news to 15 schools
in the surrounding mountains. In each classroom there's a migration map where students
can track the monarch's journey all the way to Canada.
