Marine Mammal Sightings (January 19 - February 28, 2002)
By Volunteers from NOAA's Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary

Submitted by: NOAA's Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary
Reporting Vessel: CISCO'S
Port: Sea Landing, Santa Barbara Harbor
Period: January 19 - February 28, 2002
Summary: CISCO'S boat, the Ranger 85, reported gray whale sightings from the Ventura coastline to the east end of Anacapa Island. Generally, the gray whales migrated north in pairs or alone. The one instance (February 17 2002) when it was not clear if the whales were travelling north, the pair was accompanied by a pod of about 100 common dolphins. (A megapod of common dolphins was spotted in the same place the two days prior.) CISCO's followed the whale pair for a couple of miles, but their other gray whale sightings were brief, as if the animals did not want to be encountered. Notably, there were two apparent cow/calf pairs, the first recorded this season.

Reporting Vessel: CONDOR
Port: Sea Landing, Santa Barbara Harbor
Period: January 19 - February 28, 2002
Summary: The CONDOR has taken from one to three trips per day within the Santa Barbara Channel, either along the greater Santa Barbara coastline or between there and the north coast of Santa Cruz Island. All of the gray whales were migrating north, with the possible exception of the trio on February 13 2002, which travelled east along Santa Cruz Island. The sightings ranged from 1 to 3 gray whales at a time, and there were separate encounters with humpbacks and perhaps even a a minke whale; usually we encounter humpback whales in this area from late spring through early fall. Additionally, there were sightings of Dall's porpoises, Pacific white-sided dolphins, common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, California sea lions, and an elephant seal, as well as various birds.
