News Flash: Ice-out at Thoreau's Walden Pond
February 23, 2002

"It has happened. . .the ice at Walden is OUT!" announced Michelle Dumas of Walden State Park Reserve. The official date for Ice-out was February 23 at 9:30 am. On February 20, Michelle wrote this: "The 50+ temps here for the last few days has not helped the ice situation. We have about 80% coverage with thickness ranges from 1 to 3 inches. I read in the Boston Globe today that for the first time in 151 years Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire is not entirely frozen!"

CONGRATULATIONS to Mrs. Nunnally's Second Grade Class at Peter Woodbury School in Bedford, NH! They came the closest with their Walden guess: March 1. (NUNNALLYR@sau25.net

Remember to check the Winners Page for official contest results, which will be posted here as they happen!

We said the contest deadline was February 28, but with Walden's ice-out, there are five official observation posts to go. There's still time to send us your answers to this question:
