Round Up the planes! Dr. Ackerman and his team raced the clock and the weather to conduct their aerial census. But what will the numbers mean? Also, your day has come--it's time for you to get in the canoe! Ranger Wayne wants you to do the Roll Call. Can you tell him who's in the Run today? The aerial manatee counters have landed! But why is this year's count so much different than last year's, and what does it really mean? January had the highest number of boating-related Manatee deaths ever. Why? Cathy Beck talks about the movement of Cow/Calf pairs. Daring Dean just tagged Peggy Lee with a GPS tag. How do scientists do this? Learn about the amazing adaptation that lets Manatee stay under water for up to 20 minutes, after just one quick breath. Finally, HEAR Ranger Wayne reveal the identity of the Manatees. Did you identify them all? Get the popcorn ready, because there are several audio and video clips in today's report.
  • Manatee Migration Update: April 3, 2002
There's a Manatee missing! Peggy Lee's transmitter has broken loose. Why did it break away, and how did the the Sirenia scientists discover it was drifting? Where is Peggy Lee now? Ranger Wayne is all alone in the Run, but he's got some Gator' tales for you, including a close encounter of his own. Did you know Manatees' teeth are endlessly replaced throughout their lives? Read about these "Marching Molars" and the other amazing adaptations. And by the way, do you think you could eat as much as a Manatee--even if you were eating pizza? Good luck trying!
  • Manatee Migration Update: April 17, 2002
Is there another Manatee missing--or? Get the latest from Cathy Beck and see her Season Summary too. Take a look what Sirenia scientists have learned over the last two years of tracking in Ten Thousand Islands. And try your hand at "You're the Scientist!"--compare the movements of the Manatees this year to their movements last year. Ranger Wayne has put together his Season Summary for you, and oh what a unique year it's been. Don't miss his inspiring words on why we all need to help the endangered Manatee, and how you can help. We've also got more Manatee adaptations--be sure to "bone up" on these because in the next report you'll play the Adaptation Matching Game.
  • FINAL Manatee Migration Update: May 1, 2002
It's the end of another great manatee season. But don't go yet--there's plenty to learn, see, and listen to before we go! Send a "thank you" to our manatee scientists--we'll show you how. Try the Manatee Adaptations Match Game--what inventions would you need to do what a manatee does easily everyday? Ready for a Field Trip? Journey North's Julie Brophy shares some photos with you of her Florida Field Trip to see manatees. And lastly, learn about the relationship between manatee populations and human populations. Consider the questions that help us understand why manatees need protection, and why human population impacts the world we all share.
