Introducing Mystery Class #4
Lima, Peru
(12.100 S, 77.050 W)

Hello: We are one of the secret mystery classes.

We are from Lima, Peru. Peru is located in South America. Lima is located on the west coast of South America, with the Pacific Ocean at our coasts. 15 kilometers to our east is the Andes Mountains! Even though we are very close to the Equator, our weather is not very tropical ,  This is due to the Humbolt Current. We have very little rain during the year. The temperature here in Lima is very mild. It ranges from 12 degrees Centigrade in winter to 28 degrees centigrade in the summer.  Lima doesn't have much vegetation. The Rimac river supplies water to our city.

We are students from the sixth grade in an all-boys catholic school. It is called Santa Maria, and it is from the Marianist congregation.  The official languages in Peru are spanish and quechua. Here in
Santa Maria School

Lima we only speak spanish.. We have a very strong spanish influence because we were conquered by the spanish conquerers in the 1500's.  There has been little immigration from other countries. But we do have chinese, japanese, italians, french, and english. Our ancestors are the Incas. Today many of the Incas' descendants live in the mountains where they live very similar to how they lived 500 years ago. In the rainforest we still have some indian tribes which keep their living habits too. They live secluded lives and have little contact with civilization.

Due to globalization, we have the same information that you do. We listen to the same music, we have cable channels which keeps us informed the same as you do. We enjoy soccer and basketball games, and we are looking forward to the Soccer Olympics (World Cup) even though our Peruvian team didn't qualify.

We would like to hear from you soon,

Our homeroom teacher is a lady, her name is Rocio Malatesta and she teaches us English. Here is her e-mail: rllosa@hotmail.com

The Manu Biosphere Reserve, situated in the remote southwestern region of the Amazon basin, is the largest reserve in the neotropics. This unique reserve covers an area of one million eight hundred thousand hectares of undisturbed and pristine forest with the greatest bio-diversity on the earth. For that reason it was declared a world heritage site in 1987 by the international Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
