Thessaloniki, Greece (40.633 N, 22.966 E) Greetings from Mystery Class #6, located in Thessaloniki, Greece! Anna is six and a half years old. Her full name is Athina-Anna and she is in the first class of her school. Anna's Elementary School is the 36th school of the city and is called "36th School of Thessaloniki". There are 15 students in her class and about 100 students in the whole school. 36th School of Thessaloniki is an old, public school. In the morning, only elementary classes are held. Classes start at 8:15am and end at 12:00pm. In the afternoon, some high school classes are held. There are both boys and girls in Anna's school. Anna goes to this school because it is located in the center of the city and it is very close to the apartment she lives in (100 meters).
There are six grades in elementary school (1-6). Since they know the alphabet
and the numbers up to ten, now they started to learn whole words and syllables. Also
they have learned how to add, subtract and multiply numbers. They are able to read
also phrases and unknown texts. Spelling is also an everyday study. They learn about
jobs, private and public buildings. About traffic and signs. Animals and plants.
Foods and drinks. Seasons and weather. Besides that usually they visit places in
town. They learn how to paint and use colors to make a complete picture. Sure they
learn how to write. One day of the week they learn about theatre. Some others learn
how to dance and also our renowned traditional dances. Our language is based on the ancient Greek language born 3,000 years ago. Since then, it has transformed to a modern language that is much simplier. Most of the people here are Greek Orthodox. Thousands of churches, large and small, exist throughout the country. We celebrate our name as we do with our birthday. Usually our names come from names of saints that our religion has. Copyright 2002 Journey North. All Rights Reserved.
