Sara Zimorski Reports on the Eastern Flock: May 9, 2003
2002 Chicks Crane #1-02: Moved from Oconto County, WI to near Necedah on April 28 with #'s 11 and 12. She split from these two the next day and spent much of the day soaring but not moving in a particular direction. She has remained in Juneau County, but moved and roosted southwest of the refuge. On May 1 she encountered a flock of 14 sandhill cranes and has remained with them since then. Cranes #2, #3, #5, #7, #8, #13, #15, #16, and #17: This large group of yearlings had been feeding and roosting on the Necedah NWR since arriving there at the end of their migration. On April 24 they left the refuge and made a one night stop in Sauk County, WI before continuing farther south the next day and landing in Richland County, Wisconsin, where they have remained since. Cranes #11 and #12: Moved from Oconto County, WI to the Necedah area along with #1 on April 28. The next day they separated from #1 and spent the day soaring over multiple counties around the Necedah area, before landing to roost in a private cranberry farm near the Wood/Juneau County line. On May 1 they left the Necedah area and headed south, landing in Dane County, WI to roost for the night. Over the next few days they have made small local movements and crossed over into Green County, WI Cranes #4 and #18: They left the refuge on April 20 along with #5-01 and moved to an area southwest of the refuge (still in Juneau County). They have made some local movements, including a one-night stopover at Necedah, but have generally remained in the same area. Crane #14: Last seen in Mason County, Illinois on April 13. A possible sighting near the border of Linn and Jones County, Iowa was reported to us several weeks ago but was not verified and no further sightings have been reported. Crane #9: Captured in Ohio and flown home in a small private plane on May 4. For details, see the complete story:
