Mystery Class Update: March 7, 2003

Today's Report Includes:

Is Everything Coming Together for You?
Ready for delivery, the fifth set of sunrise/sunset data is now waiting for you on your digital doorstep (see below). Are you noticing some interesting changes in your graph? Plot today's data, look at your graph carefully, and then try to answer:

Challenge Question #2:
"What do you think your graph will look like on March 20, 2003? Why do you think so?"

(To respond to this question, please follow the instructions below.)

By the way, what's the "standing" of your eggs these days?

Clues Are Coming Soon
Over the past weeks, the weekly sunrise/sunset data has allowed you to determine quite a bit about the Latitude of each Mystery Class.

In next week's Update, we'll provide the long-awaited Longitude Clues and instructions. These clues will help you estimate the APPROXIMATE Longitude of the Mystery Classes. You'll need to follow the instructions carefully. But be patient--it will be worth it!

After the Longitude Clues, we'll post more clues each week for five weeks. These additional clues will provide information on geography, culture, language, history, and other topics to help you narrow your search for your secret friends until the time when you tell us where you think the 10 secret Mystery Classes are located.

In the meantime, here's one more jammin' Teacher Tip from veteran Journey North teacher Allison Bailey to help you get ready for the Longitude Clues:

Now Playing: Countdown to Longitude Clues
"They're beginning to narrow it down", says Massachusetts teacher Holly Cerullo. Watch this very helpful video about the coming Longitude Clue:

Tips

(For those of you who cannot view video, here is a summary of Holly's quote in the video: "On the Spring Equinox, if you know the time of sunrise in Greenwich England, and the time that the sun rose in that city, there is a math process of subtracting the time and calculating that in number of degrees from Greenwich England which gives you your east and west Longitude--and that's a wonderful math problem. Now they have the Longitude so they know where on a straight line the city could possibly be located. So they're beginning to narrow it down.")

This Week's Sunrise/Sunset Times
Remember, the secret Mystery sites recorded their times last Monday, the same day you collected your own local sunrise/sunset data.
