Migratory Marathon
Traveling roundtrip between their frigid arctic feeding grounds and the warm Mexican birthing lagoons each year, gray whales make the longest migratory journeys of any mammals. To find out where gray whales are in spring—and each of the other seasons—see "Migration and Annual Cycle," along with other permanent resources found here:

Help Track Gray Whale Migration
If you're on the West Coast, we hope you'll help provide gray whale migration data this spring. To follow the whales' trip to their northern feeding grounds, we ask observers to report the following information:

  • Report the FIRSTnorthbound Gray Whale you see this spring—and the FIRST northbound mother/calf pair to Journey North!

Date of first sighting of northbound gray whales.

  • Date of first sighting of northbound gray whale mother/calf pairs.
