Remaining in Winter
Each autumn as many birds begin their journey to warmer climates, there are always some species that remain. These birds avoid the hazards of migration and have a better chance of maintaining a territory, but by sticking around they have to be able to endure the coldest days and nights of the year. To keep warm Cardinals and other smaller birds puff up into the shape of a little round beach ball to minimize heat loss. They also put on fat to help keep them warm and supply energy reserves. Help them this winter by keeping a full feeder.
