Snowy Owl Irruption
This December brought a rare opportunity for bird watchers. Birding experts from locations in northern Quebec, where the owls breed, reported a peak summer population of lemmings, which lead to optimal nesting success. Now, winter conditions in the arctic region has brought on a food source failure that has forced the arctic owls to move south, beyond their normal range.

Snowy owls have been observed throughout the Great Lakes region, the eastern seaboard of Canada, and in the U.S..
