Sandhill Cranes
The sandhill is the most abundant of the world's 15 crane species—and one of just two crane species in North America. Each spring, more than 80 percent of the world's population of sandhill cranes converge on Nebraska's Platte River Valley. The cranes come to the Platte from their wintering grounds in northern Mexico, Texas, and New Mexico to rest and refuel. From there they continue on the long journey to their breeding grounds in Canada, Alaska and Siberia. Sandhill crane migration is an epic journey of thousands of miles.
