Frequently Asked Questions about Maps Q: Do I have to purchase a map? A: No. We recommended Latitudes Map Store as a convenience for teachers. However, some teachers prefer to purchase maps at their local map store, some teachers Make Their Own Maps, and others do not do classroom mapping at all. Instead, they print migration maps from the web at links provided in Journey North updates. Q: Why is a U.S. map recommended for monarchs? What about monarch sightings in Mexico and Canada? A. We could not locate an inexpensive map that included the entire migratory route of the monarch. However, the U.S. map does include the regions in Canada where the monarchs travel, so Canadian sightings will fit on this map. Unfortunately, the Mexican sanctuaries and points south of the U.S. border do not. We suggest you have students make a map of Mexico to add to this map. Only a map of North America includes the whole migration route. This is not a good choice, however, because the sightings would all be compressed into a small portion of the NA map. Q: What about tulip gardens in Europe? They won't be on the North America map. A. If you wanted to plot all gardens on one map, your only option would be a world map. This would compress the North American gardens into a very small place, and it would be difficult for students to find U.S. and Canadian towns on a world map. Therefore, since only a handful of gardens are in Europe, we recommend the map North America. A globe in the classroom could be used to show locations of gardens outside of North America.
