“Being Caribou” News From the Front (04/20/03)

Preparing Easter Dinner, "turkey mashed potato mush"

"In a fog bank, cozied up in the tent, just finished turkey mashed potato mush for Easter dinner. Things continue to go well. Still with the caribou. Running into quite a few wolves the last few days, also gyrfalcons and eagles. We’re at a place called Bonnet Lake at N 68 degrees, 11.344 minutes, W137 degrees, 52.63 minutes. Hoping to get a plane to land tomorrow if weather cooperates. Just exhausted. Packs are heavy. Definitely the hardest trip we’ve ever done. Very grueling. Traveling at all times of day and night with the caribou. We had to go 10 km off-route today to position ourselves to pick up the food drop tomorrow. Film, video and update will be coming out. You wouldn’t believe where these caribou are traveling. Thousands of caribou are flowing over the mountains doing the most

radical moves that would put extreme skiers to shame. These are amazing animals! The land is teeming with life. We’re not disturbing the caribou because the only time we’re getting really close is when they come to us, so we’ve had some amazing encounters because they really are coming to us. Sometimes they get a little spooked when we ski downhill because we’re moving fast and they can’t figure it out.

We watched a wolf chase a huge group of caribou for 5 miles and finally get a yearling. The northern lights are going crazy, we’re in love and taking good care of each other and we’re so glad to be out here.
