Migration Day 6

In the pen today.

Grounded by Strong Headwinds

Roaring headwinds made it impossible to fly with the birds today, but tomorrow looks more promising. The cranes are cozy in their pen at the stopover site in Green County, WI.

The ultralight plane doesn't weigh much over 350 pounds. Can you imagine what happens to such a light plane in gusty winds? The plane needs to fly very steadily so it won't bump into the cranes flying so close to the wing. Every day the planes and cranes land safely is a triumph of survival for these endangered birds. If you've adopted a crane to follow on this year's (or past years') migrations, how's your bird doing? You can keep up on ALL birds in the new Eastern flock here: Meet the Flock: Hatch Years 2001-2005

Keep a Migration Journal

Today's Question: We asked you to write predictions yesterday after #516's close call. Read #516's update today. (Scroll down to "History.") How does the news compare with your predictions?

Migration Math: Winds were from the south today, with gusts to 22 knots. How many mph is that? Why do south winds (winds from the south) hinder the migration?

Record Keeping: Today is the second no-fly day of this migration. Make a tally mark on your migration comparison chart!
