Migration Day 9

Cranes in predator-proof pen in Green County, WI.

Still in Green County's Grip

Cloudy, wet, and windy. The migration won't be moving into Illinois today. The pilots launched aircraft twice in hopes of finding better conditions aloft. Alas, winds were unstable. Humidity was high. In such "wet" air, the cranes wouldn't be able to breathe properly during the exercise of flapping their wings to the next stopover. It's another day in the grip of Green County.

Keep a Migration Journal

Today's Question: The cranes are protected by a predator-proof mobile pen. What might be some predators in Wisconsin? What might be some predators at their winter home in Florida? List them in hour journal. Then edit your list after hearing forest ranger Jennifer talk about predators in this audio clip.

Record Keeping: Did you make another tally mark in the No-fly column on your migration comparison chart?

History: Never before has the ultralight migration team spent so long waiting for a break in the weather as they have in Green County, WI. The record was in 2004. How many days were they stalled in Green County, Wisconsin? See the 2004 archives for the answer!
