Migration Day 17

Still on the Ground in Benton County, IND-iana
+0 Miles
It's beautiful weather, EXCEPT for the southern winds, which are too strong for the birds and team to make progress today. The good news is that this location in Benton County is one of the most isolated stops on migration. The birds are in safe and far from any human influence. Most of the corn fields here have been harvested, so the cranes are unlikely to see any human activity. 'Windi-ana" winds win again today.

Keep a Migration Journal

Today's Question: Why is the team so relieved that the cornfields around this site have already been harvested? Explain your thinking as though you were one of the team members who have been with these whooping crane chicks since they hatched.

Record Keeping: Have you updated the tally marks for no-fly days on your migration comparison chart?

Migration Math: The team has covered 288.8 miles. If the migration is about 1225 miles, how far to the halfway point? The team thinks of the stop at Hiwassee, Tennessee as halfway. On what dates have they reached Hiwassee in the past migrations? What is your prediction for reaching Hiwassee this year?
