Migration Day 25
Morgan
County Yet Again
+0 Miles
The team awoke to a thick fog blanketing our current Morgan
County
stop. As the fog lifted, the pilots took off to test the air for turbulence
and measure the flight time to the next destination. Once airborne
and
at altitude, they met a 15 mph head wind (wind from the south).
The flight would have taken far too long for the young cranes, who
are reluctant to follow the ultralights in such a
strong head
wind.
So
the team stands
down yet again in Morgan County.

Stop! See the Cranes at Muscatatuck
NWR
The Muscatatuck
National Wildlife Refuge is the next stop--and a chance for "craniacs"
to see the birds! Located
in south central Indiana near Seymour, the refuge includes an area
especially managed for waterfowl, other migratory birds, and endangered
species. You need to be there by 7:15 a.m. Click
here for directions, and be sure to check Operation
Migration's site for further details, and to see how you can
contribute to the migration funds:
•
$15.00 buys 50 pounds of Crane Chow.
• $32.00
buys 5,000 mealworms for Robo-crane to dispense.
•
$40.00 fills the fuel tank of one
ultralight, which brings bout 3 hours of flight time.

Today's
Question: What problems might arise as a result
of staying so many days at one site?
•
Migration
Math: With 393.1 miles gone, what is the
daily average of miles traveled? How has the daily average
changed from your earlier calculations?
