Migration Day 35

Hell0000000, Kentucky!
+47 Miles

Whoo-EEE! The cranes and planes crossed into Kentucky airspace at approximately 8:22 local time this morning! Joe landed with 6 cranes and Richard landed with 13 after flying 1 hour and 12 minutes. Every crane flew, and they're safe in Shelby County, Kentucky! Think like a pilot with today's journaling questions!

Today's Questions: Click on the photo above to answer these questions:
1. Read the altimeter. How many feet high are you AGL (above ground level)?
2. What is the name of the dial or instrument that tells how fast you are traveling up or down in feet per minute? Which can climb faster--the ultralight or a Whooping crane?
3. When talking to the airport, what letters would you use to identify yourself over the radio?
4. Imagine those are your legs in the large photo above. How do we know that that the young cranes are NOT flying with you and the ultralight plane?

Migration Math: Today they climbed to 2200 feet altitude to get above rough air. With full power the ultralights can climb at 750 to 1000 feet per minute (fpm). The birds can climb at about 100 fpm. How long did it take for the cranes and planes to climb to today's altitude?

History: How many days did the migration spend in Indiana this year? Last year? In 2003? 2002? 2001?
