Migration Day 38

crane02WCEP_148

Winging to Washington County, KY
+42.1 Miles

Progress! The cranes and planes took flight at 7:28 a.m., only to run into headwinds aloft. It was a bit of an aerial rodeo to get the youngsters to follow the trikes, but eventually they all got in line. The flight was very slow flight because of 14 mph headwinds; it took 1 hour, 37 minutes to fly the 42.1 miles to the landing site in Washington County, KY. Despite the trouble getting going and the tiring battle against the winds, all 19 birds flew. Way to go, team!

Keep a Migration Journal

Today's Question: In this audio clip, Joe tells you 4 signs of a tired bird. List the signs in your journal. How can the pilot help a tired bird? Tell what you think is the hardest part about the pilot's job when flying with the whooper chicks.

Migration Math: At what speed did the birds fly today? (Look for facts in the text above to help you calculate.) What would their speed have been without the headwind blowing against them? How many miles has the migration come so far?
