Migration Day 46

Rain, Rain, Go Away
+0 Miles

Rain and wind add up to day 3 of un-flyable weather at Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge. They're stalled in Tennessee at 692.1 statute miles, the halfway point. Fingers crossed for tomorrow!

Meanwhile, some schools along the migration route are having fun with Joan Garland's visits. Joan came from the International Crane Foundation in Wisconsin to teach kids about the migration. These photos are from Joan's visit to Kennedy Montessori Elementary in Louisville, Kentucky on Nov. 14. Can you find the child wearing the white costume? (You saw photos from Kentucky's Cub Run Elementary on Nov. 18.)

If you live close to Hiwassee NWR, keep an eye on the weather. You have a rare chance to see these wonderful birds on the day they depart. Check here, or at the Operation Migration web site, for the latest news.

Today's Question: How many of the 45 days have brought fly-able conditions? To review fly-able conditions, see Ultralight Pilot's Checklist: Weather or Not?

• History: Fill in the blank: In the 2002 migration, it took 37 days to reach the halfway point in Tennessee because of weather delays. It took only _____ days to finish the second half of the trip, when the weather let them fly every day. Scan the headlines and name another unusual thing about the 2002 migration.
