Migration Day 49

Over 100 Miles of Progress
+ 101.0 Miles

HOORAY! The cranes and planes flew from Gordon County to Pike County, Georgia. They knocked off 101 miles in 2 hours and 4 minutes of great flying! More good news: all 19 birds flew entire distance. The main group flew at 2,000 feet altitude and a smaller group at 3,000 feet. Today's tailwind helped them move at a ground speed around 70 mph at one point. The chilly temperature of 34 degrees made for good flying too. They're making great time across Georgia! What state is next?

Keep a Migration Journal

Today's Question: Why do you think the smaller group of cranes flew about 1000 feet higher than the larger group? (What might have happened to make the pilot want to climb higher with the birds? Try to think of more than one reason.)

• History: Now that it's December, we can almost see the end of the journey. What date do you predict they'll arrive? To help you make your prediction, check arrival dates in the last four years on your Comparing Migrations Chart. What's the longest flight on the previous 4 migrations? How does today's flight compare?
