Migration Day 57

Which HY2002 chick is this? Find out with its banding code. Operation Migration.

Still Holding
+0 Miles

Hope was in the air this morning. Yesterday's all-day rain had ended. The overnight fog had cleared. The wind direction was favorable. But once again, the wind was too strong and turbulent. This is the third no-go day in Terrel County, with 957.4 statute miles gone. The calendar is creeping later into December. Still, a year ago today it was migration day 61 and they were also stalled by weather too warm and windy. No one wants to go past last year's all-time LONG migration, with an arrival date on Day 64—so please keep your fingers crossed for a flight tomorrow!

The Arrival Fly-over Celebration is Coming! (Soon, we hope!)
This year's arrival event is at the Dunnellon/Marion County Airport in Florida. The area around the Dunnellon Airport is not built up, and it's close to the Halpata Preserve where the chicks will land. That means guests will get one of the best-ever flyover views as the cranes and planes descend into Halpata. The fly-over site is close enough to the pens that the pilots and migration crew will be able to join the event within minutes of landing. It will be a fabulous chance to see the cranes, planes, pilots and team! Now all we need is the right weather for it to happen.

Keep a Migration Journal

Today's Question: If feeders with "crane chow" are in the enclosure for the chicks' first winter, how do you think the cranes will come to be truly wild? (See "winter lessons" on our Resources page to help you think about possible answers.)

Migration Math: What is the average distance traveled per day on this migration?

Record Keeping: Have you updated your chart? (At the end of the migration, we'll show you our chart for comparison.)
