Migration Day 59
Trucking
to a Reunion
+0 Miles
The planes and 12 turned-back cranes took to the air this morning from Terrell
County, but the plan failed. For over an hour the three pilots tried to
lead the birds south. The birds wanted nothing to do with it. They kept
breaking
off and turning back. If you were a pilot, what would YOU do? They
called it quits. The team crated the 12 birds that wouldn't leave Terrell
County, Georgia yesterday and trucked
them to
the
stopover
site in Cook County, GA. They will
join
the 7
birds that flew there successfully yesterday. The crating and driving
will be done in several trips. It is going to be a tough day for both birds
and crew. Progress is over a thousand miles now, though: 1017.4 statute
miles gone. Getting close!

a Migration Journal
• Today's
Questions: Why do you think part of the
flock has been reluctant to follow the ultralights
for two
days in a row? Do you think the 12 birds that were
trucked today will have trouble on their journey
north next spring because
they did not fly this part of the migration route?
•
History: Where was the migration one
year ago today? What sad event was reported?
