Personality and History

Before Release
Chick #30-06 wanted to be "Top Crane." As he tried to work his way up, he was really bossy to #27-06 and #28-06. Alas, he's been put in his place by the other chicks. He seems to be third from top in the pecking order.

He and #31-06 are very close together in age. Amazingly, they seemed to tolerate each other very well from the time they could walk. They had little squabbles, but nothing big. They still get along really well at the Wisconsin refuge, but #30-06 will lose his pal #31-06, who cannot be released to the wild because of a leg problem.

The DAR chicks had their health checks on October 4. In addition, #30-06 got a temporary radio transmitter/band placed on his leg in case he flies from his pen site and trackers don't know his whereabouts.

BAD NEWS! On October 17 Chick #30-05 was removed from the DAR project because of a fractured left humerus (wing). The injury happened during a thunderstorm on the night of October 1. He will not recover in time for the upcoming migration. He will need to live in permanent captivity. Why do you think he can never be released as a wild crane? (When his new home is decided, we will post the news here.)
