Flight Called Off (+0 Miles)
October 9, 2006: Migration Day 5

REALLY Windy
With winds from the northwest (tailwinds instead of headwinds), the pilots thought the migration could finally resume. The ground crew headed for the travel pen while all four ultralights and top cover plane took-off. But once aloft, the pilots faced winds out of the southwest. Half way to the birds' pen, Joe realized it wouldn't work. He called off the flight. What a disappointment! They're still in Juneau County, Wisconsin, only 4 miles from home.

In the Classroom

  • Today's Journal Question: The US and Canada both have holidays today: Thanksgiving Day in Canada and Columbus Day in the US. For what might the Canadian team members be thankful so far in this migration? How might the US team members compare the migration to the voyages of Columbus?
  • Record Keeping: Make a hatch mark for the fourth no-fly day in that column on your migration comparison chart.
  • The Migration in Motion
This year's migration adventures are being featured on a special page on National Geographic's web site (click here). We'll let you know each time new video clips are posted during the journey south.

Journey North is pleased to feature this educational adventure presented in cooperation with the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP).
