October 16, 2006: Migration Day 12

Staying in Sauk County, WI
They just arrived yesterday, and today the weather turned too crummy to leave. There's too much wind, it's out of the south, the cloud ceiling is low, and rain is starting. Let's hope it all blows away so they can leave tomorrow!

In the Classroom

  • Trailer with Travel Pen
    Photo Operation Migration

Today's Journal Question: Young cranes must be taught where to migrate, but not how to fly. (See How Cranes Fly.) Birds are genetically programmed to fly; they do it by instinct. What things do YOU do by instinct? What things did you need to be taught?
  • Migration Math: With 45.5 miles gone, what's today's average distance covered per day on this migration?
  • Record Keeping: Another no-fly day. Have you updated your Migration Chart?
