October 30, 2006: Migration Day 26

How do you know this is a whooper chick and not an adult?

Down Again
They're "winded in" at Stopover #6 in LaSalle County, IL, where they arrived after yesterday's terrific flight. Our animated map (click here) shows the progress so far. See "In the Classroom" below for some fun!

In the Classroom

  • Today's Journal Question: Yesterday's 62.7 mile flight took one hour and twenty-one minutes. How many miles per hour did they fly? (They had an initial 14 mph tailwind that eventually dropped off to 5mph, so that helped!) How do the pilots know the speed at which they are covering ground? Take a close look at the instrument panel to help you answer that question.
  • Migration History: View this 6-minute video from National Geographic to get an overview of last summer's training in Wisconsin. You'll see beautiful views of the new Eastern flock and learn about Operation Migration's team. This video also will air on "Wild Chronicles" on PBS stations the week of November 3-10. Enjoy it with your family!
