Flown to Jackson County! (+58.9 Miles)
November 17, 2006: Migration Day 44

The weather was right! All 18 birds took off after Chris, including #619 (see question below). The air was bumpy at lower altitudes and Joe, Brooke and Richard each picked up birds as they dropped away. They picked up smoother air and a 5- to 8-mph tailwind at 1000 feet and all are safe in Jackson County, Indiana. Joe made it in just 1 hour and 7 minutes, while it took Brooke 1 hour 42 minutes. They're at Muscatatuck NWR, where the public can see them fly over as they depart — tomorrow, we hope!

Off to Muscatatuck NWR in Jackson County, IN

In the Classroom

  • Today's Journal Question: When the ground crew arrived at the travel pen they discovered 619 was on the OUTSIDE of the pen. How do you think that happened? (The pen has a net over the top.) What do you suppose #6ll was thinking today?
  • Migration Math: With full power the ultralights can climb at 750 to 1,000 feet per minute (fpm). The birds can climb at about 100 fpm. How long did it take for the cranes and planes to climb to today's altitude?
