Whooping Crane Migration

Too Windy to Try (+0 Miles)
November 27, 2006: Migration Day 54

It's the 5th day of waiting to cross Cumberland Ridge. The flags hang limp in the still air at ground level, but it's a different story aloft. A high-pressure system to the east is creating winds from the south, rushing 23 mph over the ridge they must cross.

While they wait, Mrs. Black's class is busy making cranes like the one in this photo:

Mrs. Black's prototype crane wears the ID tag of #607!

In the Classroom

  • Journaling Question: When have you faced something scary, only to have it delayed? What did you think about? Did the delay end up helping you? Explain.
  • Crane-making Fun: Mrs. Black's students in Canada want to share the directions for the paper maché whooping cranes they're making for the arrival celebration at the end of this migation. Maybe you'll be inspired to do the same!

Journey North is pleased to feature this educational adventure presented in cooperation with the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP).
