Why is calm air necessary?

The birds line up close to the ultralight's wing to get the benefit of the air currents that flow from it. The lead bird may be just six inches away! That means if wind makes the plane's wing bounce, rock or jolt, the closest birds could be hurt. It's safest to wait for calm air aloft.
