Why Give Treats?

Rewards can get YOU to do things, right? Rewards work for animals, too.

The crane trainers use treats as rewards to encourage wanted behaviors in the chicks. These include coming near to the costume, staying in the group, flying and landing, coming out of the pen when the gates are opened or entering the pen when the costume leads them inside, and imitating what the puppet does when learning to eat, follow and forage as babies.

Team members have learned that crane chicks love treats like these:

  • Grapes
  • Cranberries
  • Pumpkin chunks
  • Mealworms
  • Small fish
  • Corn on the cob
