July 8, 2001 Getting Ready at Necedah The staff and volunteers at Necedah National Wildlife Refuge have worked hard to prepare for the young whoopers' arrival. Last year ( 2000-01) they conducted a trial run of the whole migration experiment with non-endangered sandhill cranes, but THIS is the event it's all been leading up to!) They're really excited, and eagerly prepare to welcome the chicks to what will be the new flock's summer nesting/breeding grounds. Members of the general public are welcome to view crane activity through binoculars from an observation tower. This world-class blind will soon offer a view of the first free-flying Whooping cranes in eastern North America in over a hundred years!
