A Sad Day
Whooping
crane #314 was seriously injured during training this morning when she
got too close to the rear wheel of the ultralight as it was taxiing for
take-off. The injured bird was taken right away to the nearby International
Crane Foundation for medical help, but she did not survive. She was
82 days old.

This! Journaling Question
- The reintroduction
of Whooping cranes through captive breeding and ultralight-led migration
has been called a bold experiment. From today until the birds return
on their own next spring, keep a page in your journal for your thoughts
about these Big Questions:
1. Why is the word "bold" used to describe this project?
2. What are the risks, and to whom?
3. How do the risks to these cranes compare to the risks the natural
wild flock faces during their migrations between Texas and Canada?
