Too Windy, Big Day Delayed

Photo WCEP

Strong headwinds today have delayed the cranes' departure. The first leg of the journey requires about 48 minutes of non-stop flight. The birds have only flown for 27 minutes at the longest. With today's headwind blowing 13-19 mph from the south, the flight would take 90 minutes. This is more than the birds can do this early in the migration, so we'll all have to continue to wait...

Try This! Journaling Questions

  • How many times longer is a 90 minute flight than the cranes' 27 minute flight? (Their longest flight to date.)
  • For how many minutes can you run non-stop?
  • If you had to run that many times longer, how far would you have to run?
