October 16, 2002 Day 4 After Takeoff (Day 6 from Target Date) Twenty-three Miles With Tailwinds Photo Operation Migration Hooray! Today's flight was picture perfect, thanks to sunny skies, cold temperatures (27 degrees F) and tailwinds of 3-4 MPH. The cranes and planes took off at 7:53 and flew for 44 minutes, covering the 23 miles to Stop #2 in Sauk County, Wisconsin. Joe and Richard led with 14 cranes, followed by Brooke and Bill with two cranes that had a late exit out of the pen. Their highest ground speed was clocked at 45 MPH, and average ground speed was 40 MPH. Everyone is celebrating some progress!
