October
16-17, 2004 Woeful Weekend Weather in Green County, WI
It was a
go-nowhere weekend, with winds just too unstable and gusty for safe
flying. Northwest winds at 25 mph grounded them Saturday. On Sunday
the pilots found smooth air at 1000 feet, but getting the young
cranes to climb
to that
altitude
takes time.
It would mean more than 5 minutes of getting tossed about in bumpy
air as the birds tried to line up on the wing of any of the three planes.
Too risky! This normal autumn weather is tough to take when Illinois
is just one flight away. Will tomorrow be better? Total distance traveled:
93.8 miles.
