October
21, 2004 Hello Illinois!
Finally another flight day! The cranes, held up since Day 4 in Green County, flew 35.9 miles across the Wisconsin border line into Illinois this morning before setting their wings to land. Hello Winnebago County! All 14 whoopers lined up and flew with the lead trike piloted by Richard van Heuvelen. The birds flew together until the last 2 miles of the flight when one bird tired, dropped out, and landed in a harvested cornfield. Brooke Pennypacker landed with the bird and a couple minutes later took off with it again. He nursed it in and landed 9 minutes later near a shallow pond with the others birds. The
morning started out with temperatures of 44 F, and an East- southeast
wind at 4-9 mph. Increasing headwinds brought the flight to drop down
into the Winnebago County site.
