Waiting Out the Weather

Photo Heather Ray, WCEP
No go today. Heather Ray gives this news: "Depending on which pilot reported wind conditions this morning, it was either good news or bad news. Brooke reported a speed of 32 mph at 400-ft. altitude--not bad. Richard and Joe where both reporting 9-10 knot headwinds resulting in only 18 mph airspeed. This would make the next leg of the trip a flight of more than 2 1/2 hours. We're standing down today, and likely tomorrow too with a weather system moving in this afternoon that we'll have to wait out."

Map the Migration
Make your own map using the latest migration data

Try This! Activities
  • Compare last year's migration progress with this year's, using the maps above.
  • Create your own crane span measurement (7-8 feet, as seen in the photo above) and stretch your arms wide to see how your arm-spread compares with a Whooping crane's wingspan!
