October 26, 2003 Day 11 #303 Flies With Her Flock Again! How many miles have they flown so far? This migration is breezing right along! Today brought relief and joy when female #303 took to the skies in her first flight since her knee surgery October 7. She had Richard's ultralight all to herself, which made an easier flight for her. She flew beautifully above his left wingtip for the entire 56.7 mile leg of the migration. Off Brook's wingtips, the other fifteen birds formed two lines, with eight off the left and seven trailing the right side. All 16 cranes landed at 8:23 A.M. in Kankakee County, their final stopover in the state of Illinois. Heather reports sunny but "c-c-c-cold" weather, and by the time they landed, winds had increased from 5 mph to 20 mph out of the northwest for a rough landing.
